Smith and wesson model 36 serial number date.
I am a new member to this forum and would appreciate any help. I just purchased what I believe to be an older model 36. After doing a little research online to date it I am more confused than when I started. The serial # in between the grips is 2J7924. The yoke says Mod 36 and below that it is stamped 58992.
I always thought the numbers should match so I'm not sure if I have a parts matching revolver or not? Not sure about the grips either? I am sorry that the pic is so small. I'm not the smartest computer guy.

This numbering sequence continued til, I believe, about 1981/82 when they changed to three letters & four numbers, or the alpha numeric serial numbers, like AAA0001 and so on. It's a little confusing at first, but once you are able to look at a multi-year database of numbers, it all makes sense.
If I had to guess, based on my database, I'd say your gun probably shipped in May/June of 1970.
